Schalmont families enjoyed a new approach to our Freshman Walkthrough this week, one focused more on simply helping students feel more comfortable for their first day of High School.
Families were able to stay together as they found classrooms and tried out lockers, instead of splitting up to learn about the year ahead.
Principal Matthew Heckman explained that discussions about academics and expectations already took place back in the spring when it was more helpful to families. That also gave teachers and counselors more time to prepare 8th grade families for High School.
Schalmont freshmen will have another orientation during the first week of school, where they’ll learn about procedures and reminders about what to expect. But Thursday was about the simple things, like knowing where to go and touring your new school.
“We wanted today to be about our students feeling comfortable and confident on their first day of high school,” said Mr. Heckman. “Our counselors and student volunteers did a wonderful job answering questions and our families seemed to enjoy the freedom to explore our school together.”
