The Board of Education met last night for its regular meeting. Here is a summary.
- The Board of Education adopted the proposed 2026-2027 school budget, which our community will vote on Tuesday, May 19. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Reardon explained that next year’s budget preserves all student programs and supports with no cuts to faculty or staff.
The proposed budget includes a 1.95% tax levy increase, largely needed to help address rising health insurance costs, a challenge facing most districts. While the NYS Tax Cap allows a 4.2% increase, Dr. Reardon said a 1.95% increase both keeps Schalmont financially strong and continues all opportunities for our students.
More information will be shared in the upcoming weeks, including a budget newsletter mailed to all homes in May. Dr. Reardon’s presentation is available here.
- The Board of Education accepted letters of retirement for Schalmont Teaching Assistant Erika Filkins and Teacher Corinne Kinns. Here is what Dr. Reardon wrote about each. Congratulations!
“Erica Filkins, who has served the Schalmont Central School District at all levels for the past 26 years, will retire at the end of this school year. We wish her nothing but the best as she embarks on her next well-deserved chapter!”
“Cori Kinns will be retiring at the end of the school year, marking 40 years of service to Schalmont; 44 total to public education. Not only is Schalmont losing a tremendous special educator, but Cori could always be counted on to be the last one standing during our Opening Day Service Recognition Ceremony. Best of luck in your next chapter, Cori!”
