Students have been visiting local locks recently for a Student Stewardship pilot program involving a partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

“We received an amazing tour of Lock 8 during our first week and were lucky enough to watch the entire process of a boat traveling through the lock, with each step explained along the way. The lockmaster answered all of our questions and couldn’t have been more accommodating,” said Program Coordinator Molly Brown. “Last week we did clean ups at Locks 9 and 10, filling three garbage bags and removing two tires from the water’s edge.”
