Letter About NYS Mandate on Cell Phone Use in Schools

Dear Schalmont families,

We would like to update our families about cell phones and personal electronic devices, as New York State now requires schools to limit student use of them during the school day starting this September.

We have put together the following guidelines to help students and families as we navigate this new requirement, which aims to create a more focused and productive learning environment where students are encouraged to focus on their education and personal development.

  • Devices Must Be Off and Stored: Students are expected to turn off and securely store their personal devices in their lockers or book bags when they arrive at school. Devices should not be visible or in use during the school day, including class, lunch, or passing periods.
  • Personal Devices: Personal devices that are not allowed during the school day include cell phones, tablets, handheld devices, smart watches, earbuds and headphones.
  • Emergency Communication: We recognize that there may be times when a student needs to communicate with a parent or guardian. Should this occur, students can request to use a school phone in the classroom or through the main office to contact their family. Parents are also welcome to contact the main office directly if there is an emergency.
  • Exceptions for Medical or Educational Purposes: In cases where a student requires a device for medical reasons or as part of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan, exceptions will be made. Parents and guardians should contact the school administration to make any necessary arrangements.
  • Enforcement and Consequences: Students who do not comply with this policy will have their device confiscated and may face disciplinary action in accordance with the District Code of Conduct. Devices will be returned to students at the end of the school day, and repeated violations may result in further consequences.

Additional details are available in our District Cell Phone & Personal Electronic Device Guidelines. As always, if you have a question, please talk with your child’s principal.

Thank you.
