Capital Project Update

Schalmont would like to share an update on our Capital Project that is taking place this summer at the Schalmont Middle & High School and Jefferson Elementary campuses.

Air conditioning is being installed in all classrooms, along with some heating upgrades at Jefferson Elementary to address issues with a few hallways, as HVAC systems are improved in all three school buildings.

Traffic safety and flow are being improved at both campuses. At Jefferson Elementary, the parking lot on Ford Avenue will be reconfigured with the drop-off loop separated from the inner parking lot to improve safety and traffic during pick-up and drop-off times.

At the Middle & High School campus, a roundabout at the bus loop exit will help improve safety at the intersection and move traffic more smoothly through the campus. Landscaped medians will also be installed along the student and employee parking area to improve safety and traffic flow.

Schalmont expects all work to be completed by the start of the 2023-2024 school year. Construction crews were ready as soon as school ended to begin the road work. Preparations for HVAC upgrades started after school and on weekends in June to help ensure work is completed in time.

The Capital Project was approved by our community last year and has no impact on taxes. Funding comes from a Capital Reserve Fund, which voters approved the creation of in 2018, and federal funding. Work started in June following an almost year-long review by New York State and a bidding process.
