Over the last few weeks, Schalmont Teachers’ Association has been working closely to communicate with students and families during the Coronavirus pandemic. Through teachers’ ongoing discussions with students, they have learned about many families in our community who are struggling for various reasons related to COVID-19.
We also know that many of our local businesses and restaurants, who always support our school events, also face economic concerns due to closures. In an effort to try to provide some basic ease during such an unprecedented time to families, as well as help local Rotterdam businesses, STA members and STA retirees decided to personally purchase gift certificates to local Rotterdam restaurants and businesses and give them to families in need.
So far we have worked to provide over $4,000.00 in donations. We value and care greatly about our Schalmont students and families and hope that these little surprise gift certificates can help provide a little relief and peace at such a stressful time. As a community, we will continue to work together to best support our students and their families.
If any Schalmont families are in further need of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your students’ teachers and building administrators to ensure we are working together to provide as much support as possible. As Coretta Scott King once said, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” We are a Schalmont community; in solidarity, we will find comfort and peace during this challenging time.
