Parent Letter If Child Has COVID-19 Symptoms

The following letter is from our school nurses and explains what to do if your child has COVID-19 symptoms.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Your child is being sent home today due to having one or more of the following symptoms, which may be consistent with the COVID-19 illness. Out of an abundance of caution and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements, we ask that you please follow the directions below. Thank you for working with us to keep your child and our school community healthy and safe.

Symptoms:
  • Fever / chills
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Headache
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Congestion or runny nose
The NYSDOH requires that your child will need all of the following before returning to school:
  • A doctor’s note clearing your child to return
  • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test result OR a doctor indicating an alternate diagnosis and COVID-19 is not suspected (a signed note documenting unconfirmed acute illnesses, such as viral upper respiratory illness (URI) or viral gastroenteritis, will not suffice)
  • Be fever free for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medication
  • Symptoms need to be resolving
If a COVID-19 test was recommended but not done, and no alternate diagnosis is indicated, OR your child was not seen by a doctor, your child will need all of the following before returning to school:
  • Your child must remain home for at least 10 days since the onset of symptoms
  • A letter of release from isolation from the local Department of Health
  • Be fever free for 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications
  • Symptoms need to be resolving
If your child is COVID-19 positive, all of the following must be completed before returning to school:
  • Your child must remain home for at least 10 days since the onset of symptoms
  • A letter of release from isolation from the local Department of Health
  • Be fever free for 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications
  • Symptoms need to be resolving
