The Schalmont Central School District is hosting a College Fair on Wednesday, September 19, 6:30-8 p.m. Admission is free, and students are encouraged to prepare ahead of time to get the most out of the fair experience.

The fair is intended to get information to make the best decision for posthigh school careers.

Here are some tips for those looking to attend:

Before the fair

  •  Decide what types of colleges you are interested in (2-year or 4-year, large or small, urban or rural, etc.). Determine which of the attending colleges fit your preferences and decide which of these are most important for you to visit during the fair.
  •  Create pre-printed address labels with information most requested by admissions reps. This saves you time at each table and allows you to visit more schools. Info to include: Name, Address, Email, Phone, High School, Graduation Date, SAT/ACT Scores, Majors of Interest, Sports/Extracurriculars.

At the fair

  • Create a good first impression! Dress neatly. Have a firm handshake. Introduce yourself at each table.
  •  Prepare your important questions in advance. Ask questions with answers not easily found on a college’s website. Make sure your questions are particular to your needs and interests. Sample questions:
  • 1. What makes your college unique? 9. What’s the surrounding area like? Is it easy to get around?
    2. What academic programs is your college most known for? 10. What are the most popular majors?
    3. How would you describe the kids that go there? Where do most of them come from? 11. How would you describe the academic pressure and workload?
    4. Where do kids hang out on campus? 12. What support services are available (academic advisers, tutors, etc.)?
    5. What happens on weekends—are there things to do on campus or in town, or do most kids go home? 13. What’s the faculty like? How accessible are they outside of class?
    6. Are fraternities and sororities a big part of campus life? 14. Are there opportunities for internships?
    7. What are the housing options for freshmen? 15. Are any big changes in the works that I should know about?
    8. What are the most popular clubs and activities?
