Schalmont alum and author Amalia Dillin kicks off summer reading

female author sitting in the library with studentsLocal author and Schalmont grad Amalia Dillin visited the High School Library in June as part of the library’s “Summer Reading Kick-off celebration. Author of the "Fate of the Gods" trilogy and "Helen of Sparta," Amalia graduated from Schalmont in 2002 and received a degree in Classics and English from the University of North Dakota. Her novel Helen of Sparta was an Amazon bestseller, reaching #3 overall in the Kindle store (with over 150,000 downloads during its first month).

Amalia spoke to students about her writing life, the ups and downs of the publishing world, and her experiences here at Schalmont and in college (she originally went to school for Wildlife Biology, switching to the Classics after taking a Latin course!). An avid reader, she also talked about the writers who inspired her and brought along some of her favorite YA novels to give away. She generously gifted the library with copies of her Fate of the Gods and Helen series.

In addition to the author visit, students took part in “Speed-dating with Books and coloring activities (including a bookmark contest) throughout the day. We celebrated the many wonderful books students read this school year (complete with QR codes to student-created book trailers) and enjoyed a special “Your Teachers are Readers display (see the slideshow on the library home page). Students left with some free books to jump-start their summer reading.
