High, middle schools conduct successful lockdown drill

The Schalmont Central School District, in conjunction with Rotterdam Police Department, conducted a successful lockdown drill at the middle school/high school campus this morning, Monday, March 5.

Schalmont conducts four state-mandated lockdown drills each school year.

Some lockdown drill dates and times are announced to the staff beforehand, and others are unannounced, meaning the staff does not know the exact date and time the drill will take place. This allows everyone to practice multiple ways a lockdown might be called in event of an actual emergency.

During a lockdown drill, students and staff practice clearing hallways, locking doors and taking positions out of sight as quickly as possible. According to the Board of Regents, lockdown drills prepare schools for “the highest level of threat.

Our building and district level safety planning committees constantly review our current practices related to school safety.

In addition to lockdown drills, the district has many other enhanced safety practices and protocols in place:

“The safety and security of our students is our number one priority, said Superintendent Carol Pallas. “We are constantly looking at ways to enhance and upgrade our security systems and protocols. While we appreciate the Sabre community’s interest in the details of our security protocols, the district must ensure that they remain confidential so as not to defeat their intended purpose.

Safety at Schalmont isn’t any single person’s responsibility, so we continually work with students and staff to make sure our security protocols are being adhered to. We also rely on our parents and community members.  If you find that that a security procedure is not being followed, please share the specifics of the situation with Schalmont School Resource Officer Det. Patrick Farry at 518- 355-6110, Ext. 3024 or; or Superintendent Carol A. Pallas at 518-355-9200, Ext. 4001 or

Thank you.
