Four candidates vie for three open board of ed seats

On May 17, voters will elect three candidates to three open seats on the Schalmont Board of Education. Theses seats are currently held by John DiCocco, Amelia Hallam, and Robert Sheehan.

There are four candidates vying for the position, each of which carries a three-year term of office that would begin July 1, 2016.

Elections are "at large," which means that each candidate is eligible for every vacancy rather than only for a specific seat. The top three candidates with the most votes will be elected to the board of education.

Amelia Hallam

Amelia HallamAmelia Hallam is running for her second term. She is an operating room technician at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, where she has been employed for approximately 28 years. She has also served the Duanesburg, Niskayuna and Schalmont school districts as a teacher’s aide and monitor. Hallam is a past-president of the Mohonasen-Schalmont swim club and has volunteered her time with the Albany Starfish Swim Team. She has also served on the district’s Budget Advisory Committee for several years. Hallam graduated from Notre Dame High School in Schenectady. She and her husband, Sean, have two children who are Schalmont High School alumni.



Robert Sheehan

photo of Robert SheehanRobert Sheehan is serving his fifth term on the Schalmont Board of Education. He is a pharmacy consultant with the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Program Implementation and Administration, Clinical Drug Review and Implementation Unit. Sheehan was awarded the EMS Leadership Award from the Schenectady County EMS Council. He is a member of the New York State Public Employee Federation and has served on the district’s Board Policy, Board Audit, and Budget Advisory committees. He is also member of the Schalmont Athletic Association. Sheehan graduated from Schalmont High School and attended Union University and Albany College of Pharmacy. He lives with his wife, Sharon, on Autumn Run in Rotterdam. They have three children: two daughters and a son who are Schalmont High School alumni.

Jean C. Hanson

Jean HansonJean C. Hanson is seeking her first term on the Schalmont Board of Education. She is a data analyst/manager for the New York State Office of the Medical Inspector General. She is a member of the district’s Facilities Committee. Hanson graduated from Schalmont High School. She attended Schenectady County Community College, where she majored in culinary arts and, later, accounting. She and her husband, Steven, have two children who are Schalmont High School alumni.




John DiCocco

John DiCoccoJohn DiCocco is running for his second term. He is Manager of Contract and Risk Management for General Electric’s Renewable Energy Onshore Wind Business. He has served on the district’s Budget Advisory Committee, Facilities Committee, and Policy Committee. He is a member of Rotterdam Elks and Sons of Italy. After graduating from Draper High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He and his wife, Brenda, have three children: one Schalmont alumni and two currently attending Schalmont schools at the secondary level.
