First Graders Read Virtually to Therapy Dogs

Students reads virtually to therapy dog First graders in Ms. Pink’s classroom still enjoy reading to therapy dogs even though health precautions mean the furry friends and their owners cannot visit the school this year.

Instead, students read to the dogs by videoconferencing with them, practicing their reading and holding up the books to the laptop camera so the dogs can see the pictures.

Ms. Pink explained that her classes have been reading to dogs from Therapy Dogs International’s Tail Waggin’ Tutors program for more than 10 years. The program creates a relaxed atmosphere for students to practice their reading.

“It’s a little bit more of a challenge doing it virtually but to hear their excitement as they read to the dogs makes it all worth it,” said Ms. Pink.
