As the COVID-19 crisis continues we are working daily to communicate the changes as they apply to our Schalmont Community. Today, we learned that all schools will now be on a 2-week cancelation at the request of Governor Cuomo beginning Wednesday, March 18th. There are many questions related to this and we are committed to working our way through all the questions and providing you as much information as we can on a regular basis.
What does this mean for you and your children?
As the crisis continues we have asked all of our teachers to plan a series of educational courses and/or learning activities that can be implemented through online learning and distance learning platforms. The teachers will communicate with students to provide assignments and check-in on work progression. This does require some monitoring by parents to ensure that students are logging in and engaging with teachers. Prior to this break students at the elementary level received Chromebooks so that they could keep engaged with teachers in the event that this crisis extended to more than 1 week. Secondary level students already have Chromebooks.
What about Food Programs and Connectivity to School?
Schalmont will continue to operate our meal programs for families who receive free or reduced lunch. This will be on an abbreviated schedule. Pick up times are Tuesdays, 8:00 – 9:00 or 2:00 to 3:00 PM. To reduce the risk of further spread our pick up program will have you remain in your car as you come to the main circle entrance of the high school. Staff will come to your vehicle with the meals (both breakfast and lunch per child). We have placed a form on our website for families that participate in this program to place orders. You may also call the district office at 518.355.9200. In an effort to be proactive we are also looking at longer-term solutions with local business partners in the community.
Charter Communications is offering free internet services to families that do not have a connection to the internet to help students connect to educators. This service is available for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. Please call the school at 518-355-9200 x3099 if you do not have access to the internet so we may work to assist you.
What about after school, musical and athletic activities?
All athletic events are currently suspended. Therefore, all practices for scholastic sports are suspended as well. No other events or activities will occur, and all future events, including Adult Education, are canceled to April 30th.
Schalmont Board of Education Meetings
We will continue to hold Board meetings but now located in the District Office, address. The Board meetings will not be open to the public but we will provide a live stream link to our community on the day of each meeting.
Can we come to school?
NO, the school is closed and access is restricted for all individuals, this includes teachers beginning Wednesday, March 18th. In an effort to keep the schools sanitized and free of any bacteria we have taken this precautionary measure. You may only visit the outside of the school as in the case of food pickups. We will keep you informed if this should change.
As we continue to evaluate the situation we will share the updates via our website, social channels and personal email messages. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we proceed forward during this challenging time.
