SMS, SHS evacuated due to minor fire; no damage, injuries

Dec. 21, 2015

At 2:36 p.m. today, smoke from a small fire in a wastebasket in a girls’ high school bathroom set off the fire alarm in the Schalmont middle/high school campus. Students had already been dismissed for the day, but any remaining students and staff in both the high school and middle school were evacuated. The Rotterdam fire department responded to the call. Once the buildings were cleared by fire officials, students and staff were allowed back in. The affected wing of the school is currently being aired out. There was no damage to the building, and no students or staff were injured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. All after-school and evening activities will continue as scheduled this evening.
