Brian Sherman named interim Schalmont Middle School principal

The Schalmont Board of Education appointed Brian D. Sherman as interim principal for Schalmont Middle School at its meeting Monday, June 6.

Brian ShermanSherman, who will start the position Tuesday, June 7, is expected to fill the position through January 2017 while district administrators and the board conduct a search for a new middle school principal.

After eight years of service, Sherman retired as Schoharie Central School District Superintendent in 2014 and has been currently working for the NYS Education Department as part of the Essential Elements: Schools-to-Watch program, which focuses on promoting excellence in middle level programming for New York’s young adolescents. He has also been appointed as a state director for the national forum and is a member of the board of directors for the NYS Middle School Association.

“We are pleased to have a veteran educator with such a strong middle school background and wealth of experience, join us to close out the year,” Schalmont Superintendent Carol Pallas said.

Sherman also served as a middle school principal for Indian River Central School District in Philadelphia, N.Y. from 1994 to 2006, director of special programs at Beekmantown Central School District in Plattsburgh from 1991-1993, director of administrative computer services at Broadalbin-Perth Central School District from 1989-1991, and as a sixth grade teacher at Saratoga Springs City School District from 1976 to 1989.

He received his bachelor of science degree from SUNY College at Plattsburgh in 1973 and a master of arts degree from the University of Connecticut in 1974. He completed advanced coursework at SUNY Albany from 1980-1987.
