Schalmont tops county graduation rates

Jan. 12, 2016

The New York State Education Department data released yesterday shows Schalmont tops Schenectady County in graduation rates.

The district saw a 4 percentage point increase in the graduation rate from 88 percent in 2014 to 92 percent in 2015. This is compared to 91 percent in Duanesburg, 90% in Niskayuna, 89% in Scotia-Glenville, 82 Percent in Mohonasen, and 56 percent in Schenectady. The average graduation rate across the state is 78 percent. The state data was calculated based on rates of graduation upon completion of four years of high school.

“The increase this year shows we are moving in the right direction,” Schalmont Superintendent Dr. Carol Pallas said. “We will continue to strive to meet our strategic goal of having a 95 percent graduation rate by 2018. I have every belief that we can meet, if not surpass that goal.”

When the district calculated in five-year and summer school graduations, the district’s rate for 2015 was 95.5 percent.

Of the graduating Class of 2015, 87 percent went on to a two- or four-year college, 5 percent began careers, 4 percent opted for a technical or other type of school, and 1 percent joined the military.
