2008 Wall of Distinction Honorees Announced: Schalmont Central
School District is proud to announce this year’s Schalmont High School
Alumni Wall of Distinction honorees: Margaret (Ryan) Anderton, class of
1978; Thomas P. Eichler, class of 1962; and Dr. Valerie Gaus,
class of 1982. They will be inducted during a formal ceremony on
Thursday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. in the HS lobby. The ceremony, which is open
to the public, will be followed by a reception with refreshments in the HS
library.

Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m.

Schalmont Middle School LGI Room, 2 Sabre
Dr. This meeting is also the official budget hearing.

2008-09 School Budget Vote:
Schalmont Central School District residents can vote on a $41,550,000 budget
for the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday, May 20, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
in the foyer of the Schalmont High School New Gym, 1 Sabre Dr. (pictured at
right). Voters also
will decide on a bus purchase proposition and pick candidates to fill two
seats on the school board.

Colonial America Coming to Schalmont:
Come experience life in Colonial
America on Tuesday, May 20, anytime between 7:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
on the Schalmont Middle School grounds. Students and parents will be able to
meet Ben Franklin and visit with American Indians, a fife and drum unit, the
Colonial militia, and British soldiers. They also can learn Colonial games,
Colonial cooking, how to march and drill with the militia, and much more!

Helping
Teens be Safe, Smart Drivers:
Schalmont High School students in grades 10-12 recently attended a
multimedia presentation put on by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The
program made use of student and celebrity interviews, movie clips, music
videos, and moving personal stories to teach students the dangers of
drinking underage and driving with distractions, such as cell phones and too
many friends in the car. The presentation was intended to help students be
safe, smart drivers - and passengers - so they can avoid potentially
life-threatening situations on the roads this prom season.
Summer Basketball Camp for Girls:
Schalmont High School will host a
four-day Offensive Skills Development Camp for girls in
grades 3-6 and grades 7-12 the week of
June 30 - July 3.
The objective of this camp is to introduce, teach and develop
offensive skills as well as all other fundamentals of the game.

Schalmont School Nurse Honored in New Book:
Congratulations to Joanne Jones, the Woestina Elementary School
nurse, on being selected as an outstanding support employee by
the Engage Institute and included in a newly released book,
Building Better Schools by Engaging Support Staff. She was
nominated by Sandra Beloncik, a member of the Schalmont Board of
Education.

Congratulations to Schalmont High School junior
Serena Bardwell, a Construction Technology
student at the Capital Region Career & Technical School in Schoharie,
on being named a 2008 New York State
Vanguard Award winner in recognition of her successful study
of a career nontraditional to her gender. The award is
presented each year by the NYS Center for
Innovation in Career Development and the NYS
Education Department.

During
a recent meeting, the Schalmont Board of
Education took time to recognize several varsity
sports teams and student-athletes for excellence in athletics
during the 2007-2008 winter season.

Jefferson
Elementary Celebrates New Computer Lab: Jefferson
Elementary School recently held an open house to celebrate the
completion and opening of a new computer lab. Teachers will be
able to take their entire class into the lab so students can
develop their keyboarding skills and complete technology-driven
projects such as PowerPoint presentations and typed reports.

CTP Student Earns Eagle Scout Title: Congratulations to
Frederick E. Slurff, Jr., on earning the title of
Eagle Scout,
the highest rank possible in the Boy Scouts. The organization estimates that
only 5 percent of its members achieve this honor. Fred is a member of Boy
Scout Troop 54 and a student in the Community Transition Program, which is
offered jointly by Schalmont Central School District, Mohonasen Central School District
and Schenectady ARC. Click

Marching Band & Wind Ensemble in FL:
Congratulations to both Schalmont High School music groups on their
selection for Disney Magic Music Days, a program that teaches students the
value of teamwork, discipline, artistic growth, and performance excellence.
Over winter recess, participating students had a chance to perform for
thousands of people at Walt Disney World (pictured at left) and to take part
in several performing arts workshops.

Dollars
for Scholars is a local, community based scholarship foundation
which provides financial opportunities for Schalmont High School students
who plan to attend four- year, two-year, vocational or technical colleges.
Scholarships are awarded annually.

Engineering Club
Wins Award for Futuristic City:
Congratulations
to all six members of the Schalmont Middle School Engineering Club on
winning an award for “Best Air Transportation Design” at the
Future City Competition held at Hudson Valley Community
College this January. They joined other seventh- and
eighth-grade students from around the Capital District in
writing essays, designing computer models and building 3-D
models of their ideal future city.
