Summer School Guidelines
Schalmont summer school provides an excellent
opportunity for students to earn credit not awarded during the
school year. Please read the following guidelines carefully
before classes begin. All summer school participants receive a copy
of the following guidelines, and are required to sign a
statement that they have read and are willing to abide by those
guidelines.
Attendance: A student's success in
summer school is directly related to his/her attendance.
Students are expected to be in class and to participate on a
daily basis. Lateness to class is unacceptable. During the
summer session, there are not opportunities for make-up work. If
a student is absent from a class, regardless of the reason, he
or she,
at the teacher's discretion, will receive a zero for
work missed and not completed. Students must attend classes on a
daily basis or be willing to accept the unfortunate
consequences. Family vacation is not considered
a legal excuse for absence from summer school. In order to obtain
credit, students may not exceed five days of absence from summer
school.
HS Grading Policy:
Effective 2008-09, a summer school grade will not replace a
full-year course average on the official high school transcript.
The full-year failed course will be averaged together with the
final summer school average. For example, a student who earns a
50 final average for a full-year course must earn a minimum of
an 80 average or higher in summer school in order to earn course
credit with a passing grade of a 65. All of the students' grades
from summer school will also be included on their official high
school transcripts. Students must continue to recognize the
importance of consistent effort throughout the full academic
year.
Transcript
Changes: A standard change to all students' transcripts
was instituted beginning in the 2008-09 academic year. In order
to provide a more comprehensive view of a student's progression,
the transcript will include detailed information of the
following: passing and failing grades for each course taken
during the fall, spring and summer terms; the highest scores for
every Regents, Regents Competency Test, SAT, ACT, and Advanced
Placement exam; the number of times each course was taken; and
the overall grade point average (GPA). If you have additional
questions regarding this new policy, please contact a high
school guidance counselor.
Special Days:
There will be no school on the following Fridays: July 15, July
22 and July 29 and August 5.
Student Conduct and
Behavior: As much as possible, regular session rules are in
effect during the summer session. Students are referred to the
summer school office for misbehavior or for disciplinary reasons
with the risk of suspension or expulsion. Any offense
jeopardizes the student's chances of successfully completing
summer requirements.
Withdrawal from a
Course: Students who withdraw from a course within the first
seven days of summer school will be entitled to a 50 percent
refund (exclusive of registration fee).
Interim Reports: These will be mailed
from the summer school office on
July 28.
Report Cards: These will be mailed
from the summer school office on a date yet to be determined.
Medical Problems: Please inform the
summer school office and/or the school nurse immediately of any
medical or physical conditions for problems experienced.
Smoking: Smoking by anyone is
absolutely prohibited on school grounds by New York State law.
Student smoking violations will result in a one-day suspension
from classes, and a second violation may result in termination
of the offender's summer school program altogether.
Student Dress and Attire: While we
recognize that summer temperatures might make classrooms
uncomfortable, appropriate dress is required at all times. No
spaghetti straps, halter tops, midriff tops, or other
inappropriate or distracting clothing will be allowed. Footwear
and shirts are required at all times while on school grounds.
Hats are not allowed in class.
Driving: Students who drive themselves
to summer school must park in the designated student parking
lot or area. Failure to arrive at school on time for all classes will
jeopardize the privilege of driving to school and parking on
school grounds. A rider who arrives late to class because
his/her driver was late will not be excused for tardiness.
Parents will be called, and other transportation arrangements
will be suggested. Student drivers must display parking permits
at all times when parked on school grounds. Student drivers also
must submit a vehicle identification form to the summer school
office.
Electronic
Devices: Walkmen, CD players, headphones, iPods, mp3
players, cell phones, hand-held video game systems, and other
such electronic devices are not permitted in classrooms.
Telephone: Telephone messages will not
be taken for students unless it is an emergency.
End of Summer Session: Students must
return all issued textbooks and materials before being allowed
to take their final exams. If issued textbooks are lost or
damaged, reimbursement will be required prior to taking final
exams.
