Did
you know that "man's best friend" is also a great listener?
Students in Jamie Pink's first-grade class are discovering the
pleasure of a captive, friendly audience by reading to therapy
dogs from
Therapy Dogs International, Inc (TDI).
Therapy dogs are new to Woestina Elementary School in the
2007-2008 school year. Miss Pink introduced her students to
the benefits of reading to therapy dogs after the
Thanksgiving holiday. Some of those benefits include:
- Improved confidence in reading and reading fluency,
- Increased awareness of how to interact with animals, and
- Increased comfort with reading aloud.
Reading to dogs, who don't make judgments if a mistake is
made, is a relaxing way for young students to develop their
reading skills. TDI currently brings its
certified
therapy dogs to Woestina twice a month.
