Kindergarten Wins Penny Wars, Earns Sweet Reward:
Congratulations to the Mariaville Elementary kindergartners who
together won Penny Wars, a fifth-grade fundraiser. Penny Wars
collected over $1,000 in loose change to be put toward the
fifth-grade fieldtrip to the Bronx Zoo. For their prize,
kindergartners earned a chance to throw pies at three brave
fellows: Principal Brian Hunt, fifth-grade teacher Mark Woodrow
(pictred) and fifth-grade student-teacher Brian Woods.

A Newsletter for Parents: The
Schalmont Elementary Edition
is published and sent home several times a year.
Each issue explores challenges faced by parents of today's
elementary school
students. The most recent issue focuses on
how essential math is in everyday life as well as in school. You can
click here for more issues of the newsletter and articles on
other issues faced by modern parents.
Breakfast - A Good Start to the School Day:
All Schalmont elementary students are encouraged
to start the school day with a good breakfast. Teachers often
incorporate principles of good nutrition in their lesson plans,
and each school gives students the opportunity to purchase
nutritious breakfast foods.

Keeping Kids Out of the "No Zone":
This fall, Mariaville
Elementary School students had the opportunity to learn
how to stay safe around big trucks thanks to Steve Black, a
Schalmont parent and driver for Price Chopper. Students were
given a tour of a big truck and a demonstration on the "no-zone"
- areas where truck drivers can't see pedestrians or other
drivers. Students even had a chance to sit in the driver's seat!
At Mariaville, student safety is a top priority, and activities
like this one make for a fun learning experience.
Join the 1000 Book Child Program: The purpose of the 1000 Book Child Program is to encourage
reading. Studies support the theory that if a child between the
ages of three and six is exposed to 1000 pieces of good
literature, they will do better academically in school. The
collection is housed at Jefferson Elementary School, but all
district elementary parents
are invited to use the program daily from 7:30 a.m.– 4 p.m.,
Monday through Friday. The school will be open on Thursday
evenings from 5–7 p.m. as well.

Emergency Information: It is very important for our staff members to be able to reach
parents when an emergency situation arises. If you have not
already done so, we ask you to return information forms we
distributed in the summer and at the beginning of the school
year. Please update us immediately when changes occur in any of
this information.
Safety Drills:
We conduct three different types of drills with our students throughout the
school year, to ensure everyone’s safety.
- Fire drills are conducted frequently during the year, and
we work closely with our friends at the Mariaville Volunteer
Fire Dept. to teach our students about fire safety.
- We also conduct an evacuation drill annually, in which our
students practice evacuating the school site to our emergency
location, the Mariaville Fire Dept. building.
- The third drill we practice is called a lockdown. In a
lockdown, students and staff are locked securely in classrooms
where students are given safety directions, and classrooms
are arranged for various safety purposes.
Parents should expect children to discuss these drills as the
year progresses. We recommend you use that as an opportunity to
discuss related safety issues with them.
CA-MRSA Information for Mariaville Parents:
This fall, a letter was sent home about a confirmed case of CA-MRSA (Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant
Staphylococcus aureus) at Mariaville Elementary School. As one of
many school districts throughout the state dealing with this issue, we are
working closely with the health department on the treatment and prevention
of MRSA in our schools.
