MS LIBRARY NEWS: 2010-11 School Year

Summer Reading Program: Once again, the middle school is extending the Summer Reading Program to next year's 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Learn more...

Summer Reading book loan: Beginning in June, students may borrow up to five books from the MS Library to read over the summer. We are participating in the Scholastic Guinness World Records Reading goal of 171,000 minutes read by all students combined over the summer!

Schenectady County Public Library: The Schenectady County Public Library Summer Reading Program can be done in partnership with the MS Summer Reading Program. For more details, go to www.scpl.org. The Rotterdam branch is looking for students to volunteer at the library during the summer. Contact Mrs. Nancy Gifford at 356-3440 for more details.

Taking research to a new level: Mrs Defayette’s eighth-grade health class took their research project to another level by researching health-related professions  matching their interests. Who knew you could tie art and music into a healthcare profession--let alone race car driving, a love of animals, technology, engineering, and sports? Students shared their knowledge with fellow students and staff members during a Career Share Fair on March 16. Students used posters, powerpoint presentations, comics and hands-on demonstrations to educate their guests. Learn more and view photos from the student-run healthcare career fair...

MS LIBRARY NEWS: 2009-10 School Year

Summer Reading Club at Schalmont Middle School a great success! Approximately 65 students participated in the summer reading program and received certificates of completion. More importantly, 302 books were read! And those are just the ones that were reported! Congratulations to all the students who participated!! 

Students Prepped for Summer Reading at MS Library Open House: On Thursday, June 17, the Schalmont Middle School Library hosted a Summer Reading Open House. Mrs. Gifford, the children's librarian at the Schenectady Public Library, was on hand to speak with students and staff about the New York State-sponsored Summer Reading Initiative, as well as to inform students about programs and volunteering opportunities at the public library. Mrs. Fasano, MS librarian, and Mrs. Caputo played hosts to the many visitors coming through for good conversation and sharing, and of course, delicious refreshments!

Summer Readers Earn a Sweet Reward: Schalmont Middle School recently held an ice cream party to celebrate students who successfully completed the MS summer reading program. Click here for pictures.

MS LIBRARY NEWS: 2008-09 School Year

Library Open House: Come learn about the new summer reading initiative, summer book loan program and hear about great books on Tuesday, June 16, from 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Schalmont Middle School library.

Game Day: In May 2009, the Schalmont Middle School Library invited fourth-period silent reading students to come play word games. Students seemed to love playing a faster-paced version of Scrabble, which involved just using the tiles and creating crosswords. Click here for pictures.

Literacy Night: In April 2009, the Schalmont Middle School Library opened its doors to students, faculty and community members for Literacy Night, which kicked off a week-long book fair. Click here for pictures.
