Environmental
Club Designs Topiaries
On Tuesday, May 6th, the Environmental Club participated in a Topiary
Workshop led by Laura Mylac from Cornell Cooperative Extension. Students
learned about various kinds of topiaries and the many types of plants that
are used. We all made our own beautiful circle topiaries out of ivy to take
home. More pictures...
Laura Mylac also spoke with
our club in March to teach our students how to make dish gardens.
The many
workshops that the Environmental Club sponsors are paid for
through the money our club earns from recycling ink cartridges.
We are always in need of used ink cartridges.

Help
8th Grade Parents!!! We are in need of three or four pictures
from each student to use for the PowerPoint presentation at the 8th grade
dance. We are looking for pictures from birth to present or anywhere
in between those years. You can either bring the pictures into school
and place them in the box in the office or email them to Theresa Chrysler at
joshua24.15@ptcconnect.net.
Please, remember to write your name on the back of the pictures if you are
placing them in the box at the office so that they can be returned to you.
Questions? Please contact Debbie Lynch at 356-5866.
Holocaust
Survivor/Author Shares Story with MS Students
History
came to life for Schalmont Middle School students during a recent talk by
Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor and co-author of the
award-winning memoir Four Perfect Pebbles. Lazan shared a first-hand account
of Nazi Germany with seventh- and eighth-grade students. Her presentation
included messages about tolerance and the importance of positive thinking,
creativity and inner strength when working to overcome adversity.

Jazz Machine Entertains MS Students
Schalmont Middle School eighth graders recently enjoyed the music
of Sam Farkus and the Jazz Machine during an assembly in the high school
auditorium. The students heard all types of jazz sounds from the group,
whose members include Sam Farkus (guitar), Michael Wicks (bass), Cliff
Brucker (drums), Peter Lamkin (piano), Tony Sporanza (trumpet), and Keith
Pray (alto sax). The performance was made possible thanks to the support of
the Schalmont MS PTO and the Schenectady Musical Union.
