On
Tuesday, March 25, Jefferson Elementary School held an open
house to celebrate the completion and opening of a new computer
lab. Teachers will be able to take their entire class into the
lab so students can develop their keyboarding skills and
complete technology-driven projects such as PowerPoint
presentations and typed reports. The new lab was made possible
thanks to local grants and by repurposing an existing room at
Jefferson and computers from Schalmont High School.
"Integrating technology into a child's
learning is necessary in the 21st century," said Assistant
Principal Beth Bini, who sees the new computer lab as a great
opportunity for student-driven, teacher-guided learning. "The
more we can help students make that connection, the better."
The computer lab contains a variety of
technology, including 24 computers, a scanner, a printer, and an
LCP Projector. Each computer is equipped with Microsoft Office
XP software, a headset for listening to audio files and access
to the Internet (filtered by the school district). At the
present time, the lab is scheduled to be open only during school
hours with adult supervision.
A
grant from local government helped fund a large portion of the
renovations, such as wiring for Internet access, necessary to
create the computer lab.
Jefferson Elementary also received a $500 grant from the Exxon Mobil Corp.
Educational Alliance program thanks to local resident and Schalmont parent Frederick Slurff,
who manages the Mobil station at 509 Burdeck St.
Thank you to
everyone who helped make this computer lab possible.
