This program is for ALL district residents.

In November, 2002, the 1000 Book Child Program was inaugurated in the Schalmont School District. The program is housed at Jefferson Elementary School, but is open to all district elementary parents to use. The emphasis of the program is to encourage reading. Studies support the theory that if a child between the ages of 3-6 is exposed to 1000 pieces of good literature, they will do better academically in school.

Parents are invited to use the program daily from 7:30 a.m.– 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The school will be open on Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m. This will allow working parents’ children to participate in the program. It will not be open during vacations or on snow days or holidays.

To locate the program, enter Jefferson School through the new entrance on Ford Avenue. Check in with the school secretary. She will direct you to the 1000 Book closet. Look for our big “STOP SIGN.” The closet is located next to the K-2 Health Office.

In order to participate, a child must be between the ages of three and six and a resident of the Schalmont School District. The parent needs to register his/her child in the program. This allows the parent to borrow a bag containing 10 books for a maximum of three weeks. The bag contains many different types of books (that we do not have in our home libraries). The parent is responsible for keeping a record of bags the child has borrowed, and when they have read all 100 bags, they will become a “1000 Book Child.”

We want to offer a very big thank you to Bruce Handrahan for donating his time constructing the new shelving for storing our bags. Thank you also goes to Jim Keilman for his assistance with the shelving construction and setting up the shelves in the closet for the bags.

We are excited to be up and running and look forward to our “old” members and the new 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds in the district. If you know of any eligible children in the district, please direct them to Jefferson .

The committee is also looking for volunteers to do the paperwork, to keep the program running smoothly and to cover the Thursday evening hours.

If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Kathi Keilman at 355-0710.
