Schalmont HS Athletic Teams
Schalmont Bowling Champs:
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Bowling Team on winning the Colonial Council Championship this
February. This was the first such win in the history of Schalmont. The girls
also finished third at the recent sectional tournament.

Fall Scholar/Athlete Teams:
The following Schalmont varsity teams each received a
Scholar/Athlete
Team Award from the New
York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for the fall
2007 season: Boys Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Girls Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Girls Swimming and Diving, Girls Volleyball,
and Golf. To earn the award, a certain number of athletes on
each team must average 90 or better in the classroom during
a particular season. Congratulations to all!
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Soccer Team members who were selected
as Girls Soccer All-stars: first team -
senior Jessica Strang (forward); second team - senior Kristyn Cuomo, senior
Lisa Gallo (defense), and
sophomore Laura Snowden (mid-fielders); third team - senior Cayla Volans
(forward) and junior Ashlene Potter (mid-fielder).
Girls' Meet Goes Swimmingly:
Congratulations to the Girls Swimming/Diving Team
on a successful meet in early November. Schalmont swimmers Dana Hallam and
Amanda Vitullo placed fifth in the 200 yard medley and freestyle relays.
Vitullo also was the Section II Division I champion in the 50 yard
freestyle, and received the MVP Outstanding Swimmer Award from the section

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer Team
on earning the title of Section II Class B champions. Congratulations also to the
Girls Varsity Soccer

on making semifinals and playing so hard this season!
Varsity Golf Champs: Congratulations to the
Schalmont Varsity Golf Team on winning the recent Section II Class B
Sectional Golf Tournament! This was the first such win for Schalmont in its
history of varsity golf.

Performance Groups
Marching Band & Wind Ensemble in FL:
Congratulations to both Schalmont High School music groups on their
selection for Disney Magic Music Days, a program that teaches students the
value of teamwork, discipline, artistic growth, and performance excellence.
Over winter recess, participating students had a chance to perform for
thousands of people at Walt Disney World (pictured at left) and to take part
in several performing arts workshops.

Tri-M Induction: The
Tri-M Music Honor Society welcomed 18 new members during this year's
induction ceremony on Monday, November 5. Schalmont Chapter #3828 works
hard to provide quality music at many events throughout the year, both in

NHS Induction: This November, the National Honor Society welcomed
24 new members to the Schalmont High School
Chapter. Current members, parents, teachers, and
administrators were gathered to honor the inductees and
to watch them receive their NHS pins.

Congratulations to the Schalmont
High School MasterMinds teams on
their winning start to the 2007-2008 season! The varsity team won both of
its matches on October 30, and the junior varsity team won one of its two

Students
Congratulations to Schalmont High School senior Antonia Valentine
on being selected to join the National Society of High School Scholars. The
organization provides members with a variety of scholarship, education and
networking opportunities.
Schalmont Student Embraces Diversity:
This fall, Gabriella Marsh joined 16
of her peers in representing the school at the Schenectady County Embraces
Diversity (SCED) workshop. The 10th-grade student also completed
a rigorous three-day training session to become the first SCED Study Circles
facilitator from Schalmont. This year’s workshop drew 100 Study Circle
participants, with students from schools across Schenectady County mixing
together to discuss their differences, similarities and opinions on
diversity. Since 2005, Psychologist Carrie Shapiro and Guidance Counselor
Anne-Marie Hughes have organized Schalmont’s involvement in SCED to promote
respect among HS students.
Two Schalmont High School vocal students performed at the
recent NYSSMA
All-state Conference in Rochester. Maria Pizzino was
selected for the Women’s Chorus, and Louis Lohraseb was
selected for the Mixed Chorus. They were selected from among
thousands of students who performed in the NYSSMA spring solo
competitions last year, when both received scores over 98. In
addition, John Chandler was selected as an alternate.
Congratulations to all three on representing the Schalmont Music
Department with this high honor.
Music Students Selected for Area All-state Festival:
Congratulations to the six Schalmont High
School students who were selected to attend the Area All-state Festival at
Saratoga High School this November. Schalmont participants included: Robert
White, John Chandler, Ricky Darling, and Jacob Bates in the chorus; Peter
Trichinelli in the band; and Eric Ciarmello in the jazz ensemble. We were
proud and pleased to have them represent our school. Congratulations to all!
Congratulations to junior Andrea Fortman on being selected to represent the
Schoharie River Center's Environmental Study Team Program
at the 2007 Environmental Excellence Awards in San Diego, Calif., this
October. The EST program was one of only eight grass roots programs chosen
from among 150 nominated for the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm
Environmental Excellence Award. Fortman and five other area high school
students will receive their award, and share a multi-media presentation
about the EST program with a national audience of over 100 people from
various environmental conservation organizations.
Congratulations to senior Tiffany Milano on being named an AP Scholar
by the College Board association for achieving a score of three or higher on
three or more of the college-level Advanced Placement Program exams.

Helveston
places 3rd in NYS rifle Championship:
Tom Helveston, Schalmont HS Junior, recently placed 3rd out of 43 in the NYS
indoor 3-position Smallbore Rifle Championship. The event was held at the
Iroquois Rod and Gun Club in Rotterdam. More...
It Pays to Be Swift in Luge:
A luge is a racing sled, and the competitive sport built around
it has been a part of the Winter Olympics since 1964. Schalmont High School
10th-grader Hilary Swift continued to pursue her dream to someday
earn an Olympic gold medal by competing in the luge portion of the
Empire State Winter Games
in February. This is her fourth year in a sport that lets
athletes reach speeds of 90 mph.
Schalmont HS Swimmer Qualifies for State:
Congratulations to Devin Hallam, a member of the Boys Varsity Swimming Team,
on being a state qualifier in the 100 freestyle. He qualified to compete in
the recent New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) swim
meet at the
Nassau County Aquatic Center.
Schalmont Wrestlers Named HS Players of the Week: Congratulations
to the Chandler brothers, senior John and junior Billy,
on being named the "Dunkin Donuts High School Players of the Week" by WNYT
NewsChannel 13. This program recognizes "players who are stars on and off
the field." Thanks to their selection, Dunkin Donuts will donate $500 to the
Schalmont Athletic Department.

Congratulations to senior Mark Horwedel,
a member of the Schalmont Bowling Team, who bowled
a perfect 300 game in the fall of 2007. This was his first 300. He comes from a
family of bowlers, and is joined on the team by his
brothers, Jesse and Chris.

Swim Team Salutes Its Seniors: In October,
the
Girls Swimming & Diving Team saluted its seniors with a special
celebration. The eight Schalmont swimmers on the team
include senior Amanda Vitullo, who recently was featured in the sports section of
The Sunday Gazette.
