Psychologist Carrie Shapiro leads a discussion at the STOP conferenceThis January, 11 students from Schalmont High School took part in the fifth annual Student Leadership Conference: Students Together Opposing Prejudice.

The STOP conference was designed to empower participants to lead the fight against bigotry, intolerance and all forms of hatred in their communities. It was held at Siena College and sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King Lecture Series Advisory Board and the Anti-Defamation League.

HS psychologist Carrie Shapiro and guidance counselor Annie Hughes chaperoned the fieldtrip and led some of the conference discussions. They were also able to attend a special session for adult advisors that focused on ways to successfully implement STOP strategies.

"We want the students to have exposure to other cultures, points of views, schools, and kids. It's important to prepare them for interacting with different people in the college and work environment," said Shapiro.

Students from around the Capital Region gathered at Siena. They worked in small and large groups, heard from an expert in the field of diversity training, and participated in a student-centered action planning session. The following students attended on behalf of Schalmont:

  • Nancie Altidor

  • David Altidor

  • Andrenor Demosthene

  • Chelsea Diana

  • Victoria Diana

  • Jasmine Flashman

  • Jessica Gigler

  • Alyssa Jackey

  • Karra Mancini

  • Nicole Maura

  • Matt Popa

Shapiro believes the experience can help spread an expectation of respect among the student body.  "We hope students will be more mindful of how they treat each other at school. Perhaps they'll eat with a different group at lunch or stick up for someone they don't know in the hallway," said Shapiro.
