Congratulations to Schalmont High School senior Andrea Fortman on receiving the 2008 Schenectady County DAR award.

Fortman attended the "Good Citizens Tea" at the Mohawk Golf Club in Niskayuna on Saturday, December 6. The event was sponsored by the Schenectady Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Fortman was nominated for the award by her social studies teacher, Mrs. Ryder, and her guidance counselor, Mr. Bailey, to represent Schalmont in the annual competition. Nominees must exhibit the qualities of dependability, leadership and patriotism. They also must complete an extensive application, including a timed essay of two hours. This year the essay topic was "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility For Preserving It."

Fortman will now go on to the state level competition. The national winner will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship and invited to Washington, D.C., to attend the DAR Continental Congress.
