Pathways to fun: Career Pathways Summer Institutes offer Capital Region teens 8 choices of weeklong, tech-themed summer camps

From robots to wind turbines, crime scenes to biotechnology, solar energy to nanotechnology, to science and green energy camps for girls: lots of choices await area teens through a new series of summer camps being offered by the Greater Capital Region Career Pathways Consortium. This partnership of several area colleges and BOCES is offering eight different Career Pathways Summer Institutes that explore emerging careers in our region for students entering 9th grade or older, tuition-free, in July and August.

Except where noted, the Career Pathways Summer Institutes are daytime programs which run for one week each and are offered tuition-free. Students may choose from one of the following camps, which each enroll an average of 15-20 students:

  • Future Green: Exploration of Green Energy Technologies, July 13-17, Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School, Albany campus (Colonie), for girls and boys entering grades 9 -10.
    • Future energy is here today. Experiment with a fuel cell, build and test wind turbine and create and race your own solar-powered car. Then visit a local green energy producer that is using cutting-edge technology to compete in the global marketplace.

  • Girls Going Green!, July 13-17, Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School, Schoharie campus, for girls entering 9th grade
    • Going green starts from the ground up, and it can pay well, too. Girls explore cool careers in construction, heavy equipment and alternative energy – hands-on –  through the National Center for Construction Education and Research’s “Your Role in the Green Environment.” Instructors will include successful female professionals.

  • Green Power!, July 20-24, Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School, Schoharie campus, for girls and boys entering 10th grade
    • Going green starts from the ground up, and it can pay well, too. Learn hands-on how construction, heavy equipment and alternative energy can be cool, green and rewarding through the National Center for Construction Education and Research’s “Your Role in the Green Environment.”
  • Robotic Camp, July 20-24, Questar III Columbia-Greene Educational Center, Hudson, for girls and boys entering grades 9-10
    • Build and operate your own robot while learning how robotics and automation are used in today’s advanced manufacturing world and are a big part of some high-tech, high-paying and in-demand careers in our region and beyond.

  • Schenectady Women in Science, July 27-31, Schenectady County Community College, Schenectady, for girls entering grades 9-12
    • Women + science + technology = a formula that can change the world! Learn about nanotechnology and green technology through unique, hands-on experiences, meet women professionals from a range of rewarding scientific careers, and get answers on how to plan your career pathway.

  • Tech Valley Summer Camp, July 27-31, SUNY East Campus, Rensselaer, and various Albany locations, for girls and boys entering 9th grade
    • Spend five days at different Tech Valley businesses, engaged in fun and exciting, hands-on activities alongside professionals in nanotechnology, biotechnology, advanced materials, alternative energy, information technology and multidisciplinary engineering.

  • Camp Biotec, August 17-21, Columbia-Greene Community College, Hudson, for girls and boys entering grades 11-12
    • Explore fields of biotechnology and advanced instrumentation used in industry through local field trips, visits with professionals and hands-on activities. (For students who have completed living environment or biology in high school.)

  • Crime Scene Investigation, July 6-10 at SUNY Cobleskill, for girls and boys entering grades 9-12.
    • Science solves the crime: Be part of a team of forensic investigators and learn how to crack the case using DNA analysis, bullets and firearms, hairs and fibers, photography, then present your findings in the courtroom. Note: All students must bring lunch money to this camp. An overnight option is also available at the college, for a fee paid by the student for lodging and meals.

While tuition is free, enrollment is limited for the Career Pathways Summer Institutes. Students and their parents/guardians provide their own lunches and transportation to the camps. The Summer Institutes are sponsored by the Greater Capital Region Career Pathways Consortium through funding provided by the federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 and the New York State Education Department. To request more information about individual camps, call (518) 479-6989 or visit www.questar.org/summer09.

The Greater Capital Region Career Pathways Consortium is a partnership between Hudson Valley Community College, Capital Region BOCES, Columbia-Greene Community College, Questar III BOCES, Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES, Schenectady County Community College, and SUNY Cobleskill. The Consortium is developing new programs in green technologies, advanced manufacturing systems, nanotechnology and bioscience at both the high school and college level. The Consortium is also working to improve the connection between other career and technical education programs taught at the high school level with degree programs offered at local colleges.

The Greater Capital Region Career Pathways Consortium along with its members advises students, parents, employees and the general public that it offers employment and educational opportunities without regard to gender, race, color, national origin or disability.
