Nontraditional career choice nets Schoharie Career &
Technical School student statewide Vanguard Award
Serena Bardwell of Rotterdam, a Construction Technology
student at the Capital Region Career & Technical School on
Route 30A in Schoharie, has been named a
2008 New York State
Vanguard Award winner in recognition of her successful study
of a career nontraditional to her gender. The award is
presented each year by the New York State Center for
Innovation in Career Development and the New York State
Education Department.
Bardwell, who is also a
junior at Schalmont High School, will be honored at a
ceremony in Albany on March 28. She was selected as one of
two winners (one female, one male) from 28 finalists
statewide and has a career goal of working in construction
as a heavy equipment operator.
“I signed up for
Construction Technology at Capital Region Career & Technical
School,” Bardwell said, “because I’ve always been interested
in the construction field and because I like to work with my
hands. My Dad also does a lot of remodeling around the
house. I’m thankful to my guidance counselor and Schalmont
[High School] for giving me the opportunity to come to
Career & Tech.” Bardwell said her favorite part of
Construction Technology class is learning to operate heavy
construction equipment.
While she has another year
at the Career & Technical School and Schalmont ahead of her,
Bardwell is considering attending college for construction
or possibly going directly to work after graduation in 2009.
Currently, she works part-time as a cashier in Hannaford
Supermarkets. In her free time, Bardwell enjoys writing
poetry, playing paintball, going four-wheeling, walking,
listening to music and concerts.
“Serena is an outstanding
student,” said Construction Technology teacher Maryella
Bell, who is also an experienced female construction
professional. “Serena is a role model for other students,
both female and male, and we are all very proud of her
accomplishments. The award is well-deserved.”
“Serena is a wonderful
asset to our campus,” said Schoharie Career & Tech Dean of
Students Debbie Davis. “She helps other students with a
smile and no hesitation and is a leader in class.”
Presented annually by the New
York State Center for Innovation in Career Development and
the New York State Education Department, the Vanguard Award
honors outstanding students enrolled in Career and Technical
Education programs that are not traditional to their gender.
Construction Technology is
one of 40 courses of study offered to high school and adult
students at the Schoharie and Albany (Colonie) campuses of
the Capital Region Career & Technical School. Operated by
the Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational Services
(BOCES), the school serves residents of Albany, Schoharie,
