Schalmont High School students taking June Krone's child psychology class recently had an opportunity for some face-to-face, hands-on child studies at Jefferson Elementary School. The HS students first performed an interactive puppet show, "Stone Soup," for Michele Williams' and Kathryn LeRoy's kindergarten classes. Afterwards, they assisted the kindergartners with an art project.

"A lot of my students want to major in education, but they don't get a chance to interact with children. We recently did a unit on children's literature, so this was a good fit," said Krone.

During their performance, the older students invited the kindergartners to take part in the show. Oral communication skills are a big part of the kindergarten curriculum, according to Williams. "This type of activity helps with their comprehension and gives them something to look forward to," she said.

According to Krone, her students will be spending one-on-one time with Jefferson students throughout the school year. They'll help with a variety of activities, including those that build fundamental skills such as letter recognition.
