Schalmont High School:

  • Serves grades 9-12.
  • Has approximately 750 students.
  • Has almost 70 full- and part-time teachers, for an average student-to-teacher ratio of 11:1.
  • Provides all courses required for graduation by New York State.
  • Offers advanced placement (AP) and/or college level courses in English, pre-calculus, calculus, Java, U.S. History, accounting, computer science, business law, economics and public affairs, and marketing. The opportunity to take courses for college credit is offered through programs with Schenectady County Community College, SUNY Albany and Syracuse University.
  • Offers a pre-engineering program, Project Lead the Way, which helps introduce students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college.
  • Offers distance learning courses in theater/play production, French, Java, sociology, psychology, Mandarin Chinese, and health.
  • Makes use of technology as a vehicle for knowledge-acquisition and problem-solving. Students are required to take at least one computer-related course before graduation, in preparation for the technologically sophisticated work environments of the 21st Century.
  • Students have access to 24 occupational programs and honors-level New Visions programs (e.g., health, law and government, journalism, theater production) provided by BOCES.
  • Schalmont collaborates with BOCES and neighboring school districts to provide an on-site Applied Engineering course.
  • Students have access to a variety of music groups; modified, junior varsity and varsity sports; and after-school clubs and programs.
  • Students have the opportunity to attend Tech Valley High School. As of September 2009, two Schalmont students were enrolled at Tech Valley.
