Dec. 30, 2011—The holiday season has always
been a time of year when the Schalmont community comes together
to help those in need. This year proved to be no different as
students, teachers and staff reached out to help local flood
victims and families in need with school-sponsored giving trees,
food drives, toy collections, caroling and more. Below is a
sampling of school and districtwide efforts.
SCHALMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT
-
Woestina Community Day:
Generosity was the cornerstone of the first Woestina
Community Day, open to all Schalmont families and friends on
Dec. 10.
Designed as a way to help brighten the holidays for local
children and their families following last summer's
disastrous floods, the community event was organized by Schalmont High School
social worker Stephanie Carter in conjunction with the National
Association of School Social Workers and several other community
agencies.

Christmas
caroling for charity:
Sixth- through twelfth-graders spread
holiday cheer and raised money for charity by Christmas caroling
in local neighborhoods on Dec. 19. The groups of merry-makers
raised more than $800, which will be split between the Ronald
McDonald House and the Schenectady City Mission. Students warmed
up after the outing with hot chocolate and cookies. Students
also helped lift holiday spirits by caroling during the
Rotterdam Junction tree lighting ceremony as well as at
local nursing homes, the district office and elementary
school.
SCHALMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL
- Sabre Service
club game collection: Collected more than 50 travel-size games
from students and staff for the Woestina Community Day, a
fun-filled event held for local families in need and flood
victims. Participating children received the games as prizes
for joining in on a variety of games. Club members also
collected gift cards and unused toys for flood victims.
NJHS and Sabre
Service club sponsored giving tree:
Members of the NJHS
and the Sabre Service Club sponsored a “Giving
Tree” again this year. Students made a tree and attached
ornaments with a child's gender and various age groups printed on each one.
Students and staff were encouraged to take an ornament,
purchase an appropriate toy for the particular age group,
and bring it unwrapped to the Guidance Office. The toys were
delivered to the
City Mission of Schenectady
in December. The
residents and clients of the City Mission were then able
to “shop” for their children for Christmas.

Giving tree &
food drive:
The school adopted local
families in need again this year and decorated a Giving Tree with
paper ornaments showing family members’ gift wishes for
clothing and attire to keep children safe and warm
throughout the winter. Individual classrooms collected food donations
to put in
baskets accompanied each family’s gifts along with frozen
turkeys donated by the
Rotterdam Police Benevolent Society. Families also received
stuffed animals, which were graciously donated by
students in the South Colonie Central School District.
Students ensure homes are decorated for
the holidays: What would Christmas be without
a tree and trimmings? This is an answer several elementary
classes did not want to find out.

Jefferson holds Santa's Workshop:
For more than 25
years, the Woestina Parent-Teacher Organization
sponsored a special holiday shop that helps elementary
school children surprise their family
members with special presents purchased at school. This
teaches participating students about budgeting, making
change and the joy of giving to others. This 25-year
tradition was kept alive at Jefferson this school year,
thanks to the support of volunteers.
