Tail Waggin' Tutors help first-graders learn to read

Dec. 29, 2011—Jamie Pink's first-graders can't wait for "hump day" to roll around each week.

On Wednesdays, a pack of adorable dogs and their owners visit the school as part of the Tail Waggin' Tutors program, which helps students learn to read. Pink's students take turns going outside of the classroom for about 15 minutes to read a book aloud with a furry friend by their side.

"I like it because it's just a time for me to relax and practice my reading skills," said a first-grader named Sarah. She chose to read Goodnight Moon aloud to a mixed breed named Small Dog during a visit because she thought he needed a nap.

All of the participating animals receive extensive training and certification for their superior behavior and skill. Pink has been working with many of the dogs and their owners for the past five years while previously teaching at Woestina Elementary School.

"I am so fortunate to be able to continue this program at Jefferson with the support of the principals, faculty and parents," said Pink. "This program has been effective in helping build confidence in young or struggling readers, and it also helps children learn how to properly interact with animals."

The owners sit close-by throughout the reading sessions, listening attentively, offering words of encouragement and providing reading assistance as needed.

"I just love sharing my dog," said Sheila about her golden retriever, Taylor. "It's good for everyone involved. The kids practice their reading skills and parents are happy to see their children's excitement about going to school."

The program also serves as an opportunity for the owners to give back to their community.

"Working with the kids and dogs—it's a win-win," said a retired middle school teacher named Pat, who visits regularly with her long-haired dachshund. "This is a wonderful program. The students' progress and confidence is remarkable."

The Tail Wagging Tutors program is supported by Therapy Dogs International, a volunteer group providing qualified handlers and therapy dogs for visitation in various facilities and settings.
