Dec. 23, 2011—Generosity was the cornerstone of the first
Woestina Community Day, open to all Schalmont families and
friends on Dec. 10.
Designed as a way to help brighten the holidays for local
schoolchildren and their families following last summer's
disastrous floods, the community event was organized by Schalmont High School
social worker Stephanie Carter in conjunction with the National
Association of School Social Workers and several other community
agencies.
"We wanted to have a fun-filled day for families
since the holidays would most likely be a difficult time for them
after all they have been through," said Carter.
Children earned tickets they could exchange for prizes by
participating in a variety of games.
"The look on the children's faces when they
picked out prizes to take home was priceless," said Carter.
"They were so excited!"
Prizes included travel-size games that were donated by the
middle school Sabre Service club. The group collected more than
50 games from students and staff, such as dominos, Uno and
checkers.
"We thought the games would be a great way for
families to enjoy the holidays together," said Carter. "Many
families lost these items during the floods and may not be a top
priority while they focus on purchasing necessities and
rebuilding."
In addition to the games, children received toys donated by high
school students in Adam Dolan's
Current Affairs in the 21st Century course and books donated
by Niskayuna High School students. They also enjoyed
face-painting, cookie-decorating, music by B95.5, and free
pizza, snacks and snow cones.
"The parents were very
appreciative and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves,"
said Carter. "We had a very nice turnout and the families walked
away with a lot of gifts and resources."
