Dec. 8, 2011—Individuals helping our country and local
community will receive a sweet treat
from their friends at Jefferson Elementary School this holiday
season.
Students in select first and second grade classes donated some
of their Halloween candy to military service men
and women, local firefighters and flood relief volunteers in
exchange for a free homework pass. Students who donated 10
pieces of candy received one free homework pass while
those who donated 20 pieces got two.
"Some
students brought in more than that and didn't care about the
homework pass," said second-grade teacher Joy Moore, whose
cousins are in a variety of branches of the military services. "They just wanted to do something nice for the
soldiers."
Eighty second-graders in four classes donated nearly 50 pounds
of candy, filling three large boxes with some of their favorite
treats, including Butterfingers, Twix and Reese's Peanut Butter
Cups.
"The response from parents and children was so
overwhelming," said Moore, who received an appreciative letter
from a parent who described her child's excitement in making two
bags of candy for the people who "protect our planet."
A second grader named Holden said he donated his candy because
the soldiers couldn't go trick or treating themselves.
First-grade teacher Jamie Pink brought the activity from Woestina Elementary School as a way to not only decrease the
amount of sugar consumption following Halloween, but to teach
students about generosity. Her class donated their candy
to the Rotterdam Police Department, South
Schenectady Fire Department and St. Margaret's Church in
Rotterdam Junction for flood relief volunteer lunches.
"It's nice to see this tradition continue with the Jefferson community,"
said Moore.
