Sept. 16, 2011—Shortly after being used as an American Red Cross
Shelter to help flood victims, Schalmont High School's gym was a
totally different scene as students pursued their dreams of
higher education.
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the high school guidance
department hosted a "College Caravan"—a
group of college admissions representatives who visit several
high school campuses over the course of a day.
The caravan, organized by the Capital District
Counseling Association, provided Schalmont's juniors and seniors
with an opportunity to receive first-hand information about a
variety of educational institutions in one spot.
Representatives from 14 area colleges (see list below) set up
tables throughout the gym, provided informational materials
about academic programming and answered questions about their
respective institutions.
"Although it may look a little hectic, there is a lot of
networking that goes on between the students and college
representatives," said guidance counselor Chris Bailey, who was
on hand to help students connect with colleges that offer
academic programs in the students' areas of interest. "One of
our main objectives is to expose our students to what is
available beyond the walls of this school."
Emanuel Pelligra from Hartwick College and Dan Fogarty from
Fulton County Community College remarked on the student's excellent
questions.
"They were surprised to see how outgoing
all of the students were," Bailey said. "I told them—this is the information age, and our
students are on top of their game!"
