Feb.
1, 2012—After participating in the Schalmont Middle School
spelling bee, eighth-grader Zackary Townsend clenched the
championship title by correctly spelling the word "luxurious."
He will represent Schalmont at the Capital Region
Spelling Bee at Proctor's Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m.
The winner of the regional competition will move on to the
Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C. later
this spring.
Forty-four students in fifth- through
eighth-grade competed in the school bee on Jan. 5 after
winning their classroom spelling bees. Sixth-grader Brian
Thompson served as runner-up.
"All of the participants should be commended, not
only for their academic achievement in qualifying for the bee,
but for having the courage to get up in front of a large group,"
said spelling bee coordinator Katherine Sinnott. "This can
sometimes be more of a challenge than the actual spelling!"
Congratulations to all of the students who
participated, and best wishes to Zack as he moves on to the
regional competition!
