eighth-graders with writing advice and tips for engaging
readers.

Jan. 18, 2012—Writing a catchy lead is one
way that newspaper columnist and blogger Steve Barnes helps
engage his readers.
The Times Union food critic, senior writer and Schalmont alumnus
recently offered writing advice and suggestions to
eighth-graders in Elisa Pepe's English classes.
"You have to figure out ways to keep readers engaged," Barnes
said.
Students are in the process of writing
submissions for the Student Gazette, the Daily Gazette's annual
publication for young journalists.
Topics for submission include the health effect
of stilettos, the Rotterdam Junction flooding and bullying in
cyberspace.
The
Student Gazette is published in May.
