July 28,
2010—Guinness, Baka, Ruby, Teddy and Maggie—certified therapy
dogs from Tail Waggin' Tutors—helped strengthen the self-esteem,
confidence and reading abilities of kindergarten through
third-grade students this summer.
Once per week, from July 6 to 25, the four-legged creatures and
their handlers visited Jefferson Elementary School where they
served as reading assistants for the district's summer reading
program.
The visits provided each student with an opportunity to read
aloud a book or story they wrote in a relaxed atmosphere with a
furry friend snuggled by their side.
"It was amazing to see the children respond so enthusiastically
to the program," said summer reading teacher Jaime Pink. "They were not only excited
to see the dogs, but also to read their stories."
Pink was instrumental in adding the program
this summer after witnessing its success with her first-graders
at Woestina Elementary School during the past four years.
"Children show confidence and self-esteem in a
way that is different from working with their peers or
teachers," said Pink. "It
is truly a unique and memorable experience."
The program is supported by
Therapy Dogs International, a volunteer group providing
qualified handlers and therapy dogs for visitation in various
facilities and settings. The animals receive certification for their superior behavior
and skill, undergo extensive training and must be up-to-date on
all of their vaccinations.
