March 24, 2011—Who knew you could tie a love of art and music
into a healthcare profession, let alone race car driving,
animals, technology, engineering and sports?
Eighth-graders in Lauren Defayette's health
classes learned just that during a collaborative inquiry project
with middle school librarian Linda Fasano.
"I have more of an interest in art now that I now
it can help heal people and actually be something useful," said
Selena Dwarka, who created a computer-generated graphic novel
using her own artwork showing an art therapist helping others
express their feelings.
Students spent about two weeks brainstorming,
researching and creating a final project to present to their
peers, teachers and staff during a Healthcare Professionals
Share Fair on March 16.
"This was a great way to spark student interest
in a career that matches their hobbies or skills," said
Defayette. "Not as many people are going into these types of
careers so I wanted them to start thinking about a compassionate
field that will help them find a connection between themselves
and other people."
Robert Johnson studied the career path to
becoming a veterinarian because of his love for animals. He has
a lizard, turtle and dog at home.
Students used posters, Power Point presentations, comics and
hands-on demonstrations to educate guests about their chosen
healthcare profession, which ranged from the more traditional
doctors and nurses to art therapists, EMT/EMS technicians,
helicopter pilots, forensic scientists and dieticians.
They explained details about their chosen
career and the educational requirements needed to get there.
Despite learning about the many years of
schooling needed to become a rheumatologist, Deanna Lince
believes it will be worth it.
"I know I won't be able to eliminate arthritis and other
diseases, but my patients will be happier with treatment," said
Deanna.
Emmett Berberich researched
a career as a biomedical engineer because his college-aged
brother is currently exploring this field.
" It was a a lot of fun," he said.
