This
summer, the whir of drills and scent of fresh cement have filled
the air in Schalmont Central School District. Work is underway
on a $9.7 million
renovation and reconstruction project,
which was approved by voters in October 2007. The capital
project work will extend the life and usefulness of facilities
at the Schalmont High/Middle Schools complex and Schonowe
School.
"Much
of the work will be completed by the start of the 2009-10 school
year, and the entire capital project should be finished by late
fall. While we make these improvements, we'll continue to
focus on ensuring our students' safety and access to a quality
learning environment," said Superintendent Valerie Kelsey.
The majority of the
projects are in the original 1957 wing of Schalmont
High School. While other areas of the school saw renovations
over the years, this wing remains much the same as it did when
the school first opened more than 50 years ago. The
projects at Schalmont Middle School include
exterior structures and interior areas not addressed in Bond
2000 renovations. Since 1980, various programs and organizations have leased
the Schonowe School
from Schalmont. A heating system reconstruction project will
allow the district to continue to maintain the school as an
income-earning, quality facility.
Look below for updates on the
various projects and additional images of work taking place this
summer.
