Focus: Students will be exposed to Native American culture through the music presented in this unit.  Students will gather an understanding between the connection of Native American music and the sounds of nature.

Focus: The traditional and contemporary sounds of Egypt will be explored in this lesson.Walk Like An Egyptian” is used in this lesson.

Packet # 3 – ELA – LITERARY DEVICES

Music: Music of the 60’s – Simon & Garfunkel

Focus: Studying the music of the 60’s doesn’t seem to line up with the NYS Standards, but studying alliteration and other literary elements through music brings fun to the study of poetry.  The music of Simon & Garfunkel will be heard in this lesson.

Packet # 4 – ELA – JULIE OF THE WOLVES

Music: Improvisation and music in nature

Focus: Juliet discovers the sounds of the Tundra and creates her own sounds of improvisation.  Music for relaxation will be presented, and students will discover new ways to unwind and de-stress their lives.

Music: Alaskan folksongs

Focus: Redington’s Run will be studied in this lesson that highlights the folk music of Hobo Jim and Alaska.

Music: Fife and Drum

Focus: Students will hear traditional fife and drum music.

Packet # 7 – ELA – DRAGONWINGS

Music: Sounds of China music

Focus: Students learn that cultures clash as they study the Chinese Exclusion Act in this historical fiction piece.  Traditional Chinese music will be presented before students read this story of the Chinese people’s immigration to the West Coast and their desire to maintain their culture.

Focus: Students will learn about the story behind our National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Social Studies: American heroes

Focus: The study of “Abraham, Martin, & John” enables the student to understand the genre of biography and to use their knowledge of American history.
