The Schalmont Friends of Music organization welcomes you to the 2007-2008 school year.  This organization is made up of families and friends of students who are enrolled in the music program within the Schalmont School District.  Our primary goal is to help provide opportunities for our children beyond those normally offered within the school curriculum that will enhance our children’s musical experiences.

Activities

Last year we were able to help the district purchase three new pianos by hosting a Musical Chairs/Karaoke Night where everyone, both young and old, had fun! We held our Bottle Drive and Holiday Cookie Tray Sale, both of which proved to be successful events.  The Ziti Dinner was well attended, with lots of good jazz music heard throughout the evening! Much of our fundraising goes towards various musical in-house programs as well as NYSSMA medals and helping students attend summer camps, festivals and clinics.  We continue to support the Elementary Lunch with Santa because our top musicians begin their work at the elementary level.

Membership

Over 75 families took a membership at some level with the Friends of Music during the 2006-2007 school year.  Our goal this year is to get over 150 families participating in some level of membership to help support the musical experiences for our children. All membership names are printed in our programs throughout the year.

You can be a part of the magic of the arts for all children! Please download and complete the membership form to volunteer your assistance with any of the above fundraising programs along with a list of additional activities that are listed on the form. (The Membership form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free from the Adobe Acrobat Web site).

Please send your completed membership form for the 2006-2007 school year to:
Pat Simon
424 Bond Road
Altamont, NY 12009-5902

You can also send in your form with your child to give to the music teacher in school. All checks are to be made out to the Schalmont Friends of Music.

Meetings

The Friends of Music meet once a month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Schalmont High School Library. Our first meeting in the 2007-2008 school year will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, followed by a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 11. Future meetings are listed in the district calendar. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. We welcome your participation and support.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the president of the organization, Mrs. Laura Brown at 356-9031.

News & Notes

Battle of the Bakers Raises Over $1500
The Friends of Music would like to thank all those who contributed to our Battle of the Bakers fundraiser last year.  Whether you baked, wrapped, sold or purchased a cookie tray, your support is greatly appreciated.  Over 8,000 cookies were baked and sold, raising just over $1,500.  The proceeds will go towards the general music fund which supports many musical programs within our schools.

The winners of the contest were the Wind Ensemble and High School Band who collectively baked 273 dozen cookies.  Thank you to all the musical groups who competed.
