School Board Recognizes Athletic Excellence

During its December 2007 meeting, the Schalmont Board of Education took time to recognize several Schalmont High School sports teams for excellence in athletics.

The Varsity Golf Team was honored for winning the Section II Class B Sectional Golf Tournament this fall. This was the first such win for Schalmont in its history of varsity golf. Team members Nick Longo, Conor Hart, Dave Mastroianni, Kevin Brown, and Scott Lindell all qualified for the Class B Sectionals. Longo's two-day total of 150 qualified him for the Section II New York State Golf Team at Cornell during the first week of June 2008. He was awarded Colonial Council Second Team All-Star and Schalmont Most Valuable Player. Teammate Hart was awarded Colonial Council first Team All-Star and Schalmont Most Improved Player. Other players honored during the board meeting included: Eric Fabian, Charlie Kirchner, Louis Lohraseb, Ryan McLoughlin, Nick Reali, and J.P. Sportman.

The Boys Varsity Soccer Team was honored for winning the Section II Class B Regional Championship - for the second year in a row! In addition, the team won the Section II Class B Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row at the recent Section II Soccer Banquet, a first since the Eastern Board of Approved Soccer Officials Association began the program. Players Marc Case, Kyle Longo, Casey Jensen, and Carlo Viscusi were named to the Section II Class B All-star Team. Jensen was awarded the Section II Class B Goalkeeper of the Year and selected for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Addidas New York State All-state team. Viscusi also was selected for the NYS All-state team and was named the Section II Class B Co-Player of the Year. (Schalmont 2006 graduate Jordan Flores, now a freshman at SUNY Oneonta, is the only other Schalmont player to be selected for All-state.) Coach Chris Bailey was named a finalist for Coach of the Year Honors.

The Girls Varsity Swim Team was honored for a successful season that earned them a sportsmanship award from section coaches. Senior swimmer Amanda Vitullo was singled out for being a Section II Division I champion in the 50-yard freestyle. Vitullo's second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke set a new team record. She also received the MVP Outstanding Swimmer Award from the section coaches.
