Schalmont
Central School District residents are invited to attend a public
forum about a $9,713,000 capital project on Tuesday, Sept. 25,
at 5:45 p.m. in the Schalmont Middle School LGI Room, 2 Sabre
Dr. The renovation and reconstruction projects included in this
“Bond 2007” capital project are designed to extend the life and
usefulness of facilities at the Schalmont High/Middle Schools
complex and Schonowe School. Attendees will have the opportunity
to learn more about the bond proposal and to take a tour of some
of the school facilities to be renovated.
District
residents will vote on the bond, which would increase the school
tax levy by approximately
2/10
of 1 percent (0.2%)
beginning in the 2009-2010
school year, during a referendum to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Schalmont
Superintendent Dr. Valerie Kelsey said, “The school board and I
hope that any residents with questions about this project will
be able to attend the forum. Capital projects like this can be a
cost-effective way to maintain school facilities, but we always
want to be mindful of the goals of this community as a whole.”
The coming referendum was significantly
influenced by a report delivered by the Schalmont Facilities
Committee last fall. This volunteer committee of community
members was tasked with reviewing the condition of all school
facilities and grounds to create a list of renovation,
construction and ongoing maintenance recommendations. Schalmont
Board of Education members and administrators considered the
committee’s feedback, education goals for the district and
community members’ comments when coming up with projects
proposed in Bond 2007.
