On May 20, voters will
help fill two seats on the Schalmont Board of Education. Two
candidates, Carl Strang and Kevin Thompson, have submitted
petitions to run for the two three-year seats available on
the school board.
Carl
Strang is running for his third term on the board. He is the
director of the Northeastern Regional Information Center (NERIC),
which provides enhanced technology services, support, hardware
and training to 137 school districts. Strang previously served
as the director of technology at Saratoga Springs City Schools,
a teacher and coach at Mohonasen High School, and a U.S. Army
officer in Europe. In May 2007, Strang was selected by Microsoft
Corp. to serve a three-year term on its National K-12 Advisory
Council. He also volunteers for the Schalmont Dollars for
Scholars, coaches Jefferson Cyber Challenge and Rotterdam Youth
Soccer, and serves on the Schalmont Technology Committee. He
earned a bachelor’s degree from Union College and a master’s
degree from SUNY Albany. He and his wife, Kimberly, have three
children, one of whom is a graduate of Schalmont High School and
two of whom currently attend the HS.
Kevin
Thompson is running for his second term on the school board.
He is the Chief Financial Officer of Quandt’s Foodservice
Distributors, Inc. He also is licensed in New York State as a
Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Thompson has coached
Rotterdam Little League for the past several years. He also
volunteers his time as an instructor for business/accounting
courses at SUNY Cobleskill’s Community Outreach Program. Prior
to serving on the school board, he served on the Schalmont
Budget Advisory Committee for more than seven years. His
professional memberships include the American Institute of
Certified Public Accountants and the NYS Society of CPAs.
Thompson received his bachelor’s degree from the University at
Albany. He and his wife, Carol, have two children who both
attend Schalmont schools.
The Schalmont Board of Education is made up
of seven non-paid citizens elected to serve overlapping terms of
three years each. State law does not limit the number of terms a
board member may serve. Together, school board members:
-
Establish district policies,
-
Develop an annual budget for public
approval,
-
Approve or disapprove the
superintendent’s recommendations on personnel matters and
contracts,
-
Review courses of study and textbooks,
and
-
Act as a communication link between
residents and the superintendent.
They also help define district philosophy,
set goals to achieve academic objectives, plan for future needs,
and authorize certain contracts.
