Board of Education - 2006-07 Budget

UPDATE:

On May 16th Schalmont voters approved a $32.8 million budget by a margin of 713 to 657. Residents also passed a proposition to purchase 6 new school buses (4 large, 2 small) by a margin of 733 to 614. Three board of education members were elected. Denise Pendt (868 votes) and Albert Falcone (825 votes) will serve on the board for full three-year terms. Kevin Thompson (816 votes) will serve the remaining two years of an unexpired term.

Budget details:

This year's proposal is for $38.2 million, a $1.7million increase over last year's budget (+4.66%). The estimated tax impact of the budget is 5.82%, the lowest tax increase in recent years for the district. A homeowner with a full-value assessment of $100,000 ($3,820 in Rotterdam) will see an increase of $131.67 on next year's tax bill.

The proposed budget has five major focus areas based on the district's goals:

  • Maintaining and expanding instructional programs

  • Belt-tightening through cost savings

  • Continuing to improve security

  • Maintaining and updating facilities

  • Increasing fiscal responsibility

For a full rundown of what is included in each focus area, please download this fact sheet (.pdf file). Or you can view a copy of the district's budget newsletter (.pdf file). Copies of the entire official budget document are available for viewing at the district office.
