On May 15, 2007, Schalmont Central School District residents voted
by a margin of 626 to 480 to pass the proposal of
$40,093,742 for the 2007-08 school budget.
The
2007-08 school budget represents a $1,893,742, or 4.96
percent, total spending increase over last year’s
budget. This means that the amount of money that the
district collects from local tax payers (i.e. school tax
levy) will increase by approximately 4.5 percent. The
tax levy change for next year’s budget reflects a
consistent reduction in the percentage increase of the
school tax levy over the last four years.
The district will not be able to provide tax rates for
district residents until August.
Using the
Schalmont Board of Education goals as a framework,
this budget was built to focus on:
-
Maintaining and expanding
instructional programs;
-
Belt-tightening through cost savings
where appropriate;
-
Increasing fiscal responsibility;
-
Maintaining and updating facilities;
and
-
Continuing to improve security.
Voters also selected
three people
from among four candidates for the Schalmont Board of
Education. The following candidates were elected to the
school board:
Sandra Beloncik,
incumbent, for her fifth term;
Michael DellaVilla,
incumbent, for his second term; and
Robert Sheehan,
incumbent, for his second term.
By a margin of 634 to 461, voters approved the school
bus proposition to purchase three large buses and three
small buses in the amount of $418,700. The proposition
is part of an ongoing five-year bus replacement and
payment plan, which is designed to keep the district
transportation program up-to-date and buses in safe,
working order.
